Laurie Henry, a Georgia based artist, is known for bright expressions of color in her oil paintings. Her love of the ocean and birds is her main focus but she dabbles in many subject matters to keep her creative juices flowing and to alleviate boredom.

Laurie has studied oil painting with professional artists and through workshops.  She enjoys painting many different subjects, but she has a fond connection with painting water and boats.   Born in Florida, she spent a lot of time around the ocean living in Jacksonville and Key West before moving to Georgia.

Laurie paints in her studio at The Artisan Resource Center in Marietta, Georgia.

Artist Statement:

I was influenced by art at a young age.  My father painted on driftwood that we found floating in the Florida Keys and my mother was very crafty and an accomplished cake decorator.  In elementary school, I remember drawing and “painting” with some really cool paint markers that I bought.  I painted on my clothes, making decorative designs on my pockets.  In high school, the city library commissioned me, twice, to create a mural for their summer reading program.  As an adult, I painted my Shih Tzu on a sweatshirt and even pinned a real ribbon to the top of her head.  I got raving reviews every time I wore that sweatshirt and everyone said I should create more and sell them.  I never did.

My art went by the wayside when I started college and pursued an Industrial Management degree from Georgia Tech.  A few years after college, I started drawing again and dabbled in oil painting as a hobby.  Some of these drawings were framed and hung in my first home.  However, career and family allowed very little time for art.

Once my children were older, I began to study oil painting with professional artists and workshops.  Within three months, I sold my first painting!  I was convinced I could do this!

I get my inspiration from everyday subjects, nature and pictures.  One day, I’d like to paint en plein air because I enjoy being outdoors and with nature.
